Putting Your Best Face Forward……recovery. February 3, 2013

Hi Everyone!!! It’s actually me ūüôā

I know Loreta has been keeping you up to date, but I¬†can finally see well enough to write a little something. First of all, thank you to all of my¬†wonderful friends who have sent well wishes, cards, soup and smoothies! Everything¬†has been terrific! Thanks to¬†Loreta, Sue and Trish¬†who are nursing me back to health. Thank you all sooo¬† much. Dr. Haddle, you are amazing!!! You have been there to hand hold me all the way too. Reassuring me that¬† I will look normal again ūüôā

The highlight so far was my “SPA DAY” today! Yes indeed, we went on a field trip. Dr. Haddle suggested I go to Tranquility and sit in the infrared sauna for about 5 minutes then let the rain shower pour over me for awhile. It felt wonderful and I am a new person. Came home to have some soup and rest. Today is supposedly the worst day when the swelling peaks. It is uncomfortable, but I honestly have not been in any severe pain. Lots of healing energy with Reiki and acupuncture. Dr. Sterling came to my apartment Saturday afternoon to give me another acupuncture treatment.

I will say goodnight to all and talk with you tomorrow. Goodnight

Putting your best face forward…. swollen…. days 2 & 3

Almost through the worst of it! Bev’s face was very swollen yesterday and is still really puffy today, especially her lips.

Bev giving a thumbs up!

Dr. Haddle has come by twice for house visits to check on the patient. He is pleased with her progress. He warned her that the first 3-4 days are the worst, but Bev is in good spirits…. she even did a little dance on her way to the bathroom this morning! ¬†Besides being bored, she is on the road to recovery. ¬†Thanks to everyone for the well wishes!

Bev’s home with round the clock care from friends. ¬†I’m heading over today for a quick visit and to drop off food for the week. I was instructed to make soft foods so I decided to make Smoothie packets by freezing greens and a variety of fruits in individual bags. ¬†All she needs to do is add some liquid (like water, juice or “milks”) and blend. Easy Peasy!

Next I experimented with soups.  Bev eats a PALEO DIET so no grains, flours or sugars.  I found 3 recipes online and tweaked them a little. See my version of the  recipes below.  Hope she likes them!!!

Dr. Emily Loveland 2-2-13

  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 medium onion, peeled and diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 3 medium-sized tart apples, peeled, cored and chopped
  • 2 15-oz. cans pureed pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • 4 cups vegetable broth
  • 1tablespoon Herbs de Provance (Look Marissa! I’m using the herbs you got me!)
  • 1 tsp each salt and freshly-ground black pepper
  • 1 cup Coconut Milk

Heat butter medium heat in the bottom of a large, heavy-bottomed pot. Add onion, garlic and apples and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes, until onions and apples begin to soften and pot is very fragrant.

Add the pumpkin puree and broth, stir well and cover pot. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer soup for 22-25 minutes, until apples are very soft.

Add herbs, salt and pepper, then puree using an immersion blender until smooth (alternately, use a blender or food processor to puree the soup, then return it to the pot).

Turn the heat back up to medium and stir in the coconut milk and cook for 2-3 more minutes. The soup should be very smooth and creamy.

Ladle into bowls and serve immediately.

Serves 4-6.

Putting Your Best Face Forward – Day 1 February 1, 2013

Bev¬†did well through the night.¬† Dr. Haddle performed an examination this morning and confirmed that she is recovering nicely.¬† She had her eyelids and surrounding area lasered so her eyes were pretty swollen when I arrived.¬† It seems like they are getting better by the hour, however.¬† Bev ate some soup¬†and, with help, she had the strength to take a shower and wash her hair.¬† I don’t know what we would¬†have done without Gloria, her nurse.¬†¬†Bev took all her meds -antibiotics, pain meds, and anti-nausea medication –¬†and we got her home before 11am.¬† She is resting and is comfortable.¬† I’ve even been able to tease her a¬† tiny bit and she is smiling!¬† Or I think she is smiling – it’s hard to tell right now.¬† Thanks to all of¬†you for your good energy.¬† She is healing well.

Bev in recoveryThat’s Bev out of recovery.¬† She is recovering nicely.¬† Her biggest complaint at this point was a sore arm and that’s because it had the IV and was imobolized.¬† What a trooper!¬† Ice chips¬†are her crack at this point.¬† I took care of her dry lips with, tada…Dermologica¬†Renewal Lip Complex that I didn’t know I had in my purse.¬† She is spending the night there.¬† In very good hands.¬† Good night, Bevie.

Putting your best face forward…. Here we go January 31, 2013

Bev slept well and was calm and ready to go when I arrived at 6amTime to go

Dr. Haddle greeted her with a big bear hug and wished her a happy wonderful, peaceful day.  I know he did Reiki because of the calm energy I felt.  The nurses, always so sweet, greeted us kindly.  Welcome

We were then shown into Bev‚Äôs recovery room which was beautiful, warm and inviting.¬† In the corner of the room was a softly lit crystal and next to it, a sign that read, ‚ÄúGood Morning, Beverly.¬† You‚Äôre going to have a blessed day.¬† Dr. Haddle‚ÄĚ.¬† Bev‚Äôs smile said it all.¬† Any anxiousness that she might have felt disappeared in a blink of an eye.¬† She was happy and calm and quoted that she felt like she was in a 5 star hotel.Pre Sx hug

After she got her compression socks on, cozy pajamas, and fluffy, soft robe (that she wants to confiscate), she was ready for her final exam and land markings with Dr. Haddle.  We went to a different room which had soothing, calming music, a beautiful lamp, which caught my eye, and art work that I thought would work well at Tranquility.  Haha, Can you tell we feel at home?!

During her markings, Dr. Haddle had to shave off a bit of her hair behind and near her ear.  You would hardly even notice it and you all know how Bev feels about her hair.

She‚Äôs smiling ‚Äď All good.

A very pleasant anesthesiologist and nurse came in, did an exam, started an IV and Ahhh…here she goes!  Slowly getting relaxed and loopy as she is wheeled to the surgery room.  I didn’t feel like I had to wish her luck because I knew she was in Dr. Haddles’s hands.  All is good and peace is all around.

Thank you for following and for all the good wishes that have been sent her way.

Putting Your Best Face Forward. A Journey through a facelift January 24, 2013

Hi Everyone,

A big thank you to all who attended our presentation at Tranquility with Dr. Kevin Haddle last Wednesday, January 16, 2013. It was a very informative session and I hope everyone got their questions answered. Dr. Haddle was amazing at explaining the details of the facelift he is going to perform on me. He was very thorough and made everyone feel very comfortable, especially me! I am prepared and very excited to embark on this journey and share it with all of you. I will be posting pictures and anything I can to give you the most detailed view of my experience. If you were unable to attend, here are some highlights of what was covered last week.

You may ask ”¬†Why am I doing this?”¬† I want¬†to help¬†relieve the mystery, apprehension and fear of surgery that I hear so many of my clients express. I have been in the skin care industry for over 35 years, so I have taken very good care of my skin. From good basic skin care to facials, peels and protecting my skin from the sun, I have¬†done it all. I believe in prevention and taking the best care of yourself as you possibly can. However, along the way, we inevitably start to age. Aging gracefully, I have found, is an oxymoron! It happens to all of us and there are things we just can’t control, but we can have them improved. Over the last few years I have watched my face get lower and lower, sagging and drooping in places that just are appealing. While the texture of my skin has improved and I feel I don’t have too many lines, the sagging part has really bothered me. So, I started doing my research and that’s where Dr. Haddle comes in. He has been able to educate me on¬†the aging process and what can be done about it.

Take a look at the before pictures. You can see¬† the droopy jowl and mouth¬†area. You can see where my cheeks have fallen and my eyes look tired. And then there’s the NECK! As Dr. Haddle explained, when we see people we are usually smiling and animated so everything is elevated. When we are relaxed, this is how we look and I look at it everyday in the mirror!!! This is what I told Dr. Haddle in my consultation with him. We talked about many options and I am so glad there is something that can be done about it.

Dr. Haddle specializes in deep plane facelifts. That is what he has recommended for me along with a forehead lift. Sounds a little aggressive? Not when you¬†understand how all the muscles and tissue of the face are connected. ¬†Dr. Haddle explained this in detail at the presentation. You can go to his website to get more information about his procedures. The procedure will take about¬†¬† 7-8 hours in his surgical center. I have the option of spending the night in his cozy recovery area so he can monitor me through the night, which is what I have chosen to do. The next morning he will remove the bandages and I will go home to rest. The the incisions will be hidden along the hairline by my ears and follow along the edge of the ear around to behind the ear. The stitches are all dissolvable. I will have a few staples in the hairline above my forehead, which will be removed after 10 days. The risks are minimal and he explained them in detail. He explained that I could experience some slight depression or regret initially after looking at myself. This has helped me feel more prepared. There will be swelling and bruising and I have special instructions on what I can and cannot do. Dr. Haddle has recommended I start taking Arnica Montana, an herb that helps reduce bruising and swelling, a few days prior to surgery and then after. I am also going to have acupuncture 3 times prior to the surgery and during my recovery. Acupuncture can help with many ailments as well as overall balancing. It is known to help reduce swelling and bruising as well.¬†I believe you should do everything you can to make sure¬†you are completely prepared for the procedure.¬†I am a good little patient, so I see no problem with following¬† doctor’s orders. I will return to work after 10 days and watch the transformation continue. Dr. Haddle explained that it could take up to 6 months for the full effect to be realized, but by 3-4 weeks, I should be healed and back to normal. A new refreshed and lifted normal ūüôā !

I have had all my pre-op tests, so we are just counting down the days until¬†Thursday January 31. I will keep you posted through this blog as to how I’m feeling as the time gets closer. Right now I am excited and ready to go!
